Okay, I know I promised this yesterday, but I'm afraid you're just gonna have to take what you can get out of me these days. What with planning a unit and then teaching it five times a day, rescheduling around field trips, grading all the homework, and catching up the kids that didn't show up to class and thus didn't give me their homework, I've got my hands full. Ninth grade isn't exactly a walk in the park. The kids are definitely a handful; I haven't had any major discipline problems yet, but future incidents are certainly not out of the realm of possibility. My third hour class has nine special ed kids in it, and I co-teach with their case manager. It only makes me a little nervous to hear that I'm teaching at least one student who's already managed to land himself in court and now reports regularly to a probation officer. You'd think 13 years old would be too young for stuff like that. But it is really nice having an extra teacher in the room.

The kids have been working on a short group project for the past couple days. Designed to be a short and very structured introduction to research techniques. They've been handling it well, although it frustrates me sometimes to observe that most of my students have trouble even prounouncing words like philosophical and enlightenment. Anyway, now that the kids have had a nice break from sit down and shut up teaching techniques, which characterized most of the first unit, tomorrow's a mostly lecture day. I need to make sure that they actually learn something from the project they've been working on.

My supervisor came in on Monday and observed my sixth hour, which competes with first hour for the coveted title of my most challenging class. Monday actually went really well though, and my supervisor had almost exclusively good things to say. I think the fact that it was the fifth time I'd taught the lesson helped things run a bit more smoothly.

Anyway, I should probably get to bed before midnight so I'm not completely worthless in the morning. I think I've got the lecture notes nailed down. Back for more on this later if you're lucky.
